Management Café Podcast New Season: "Oh No, My Team's Gone Remote!"

As part of our main show 21st Century Work Life , we included a series last year called “Oh No, My Team’s Gone Remote!”, aimed at those new to managing remote teams. The title was slightly jokey, implying as it did that teams might suddenly go remote overnight, leaving those attempting to lead them unprepared and anxious… Because back in 2019, nobody ever dreamed that might happen.

Fast forward to 2020, and changes we never anticipated have changed the way we work, perhaps forever. So we’re redistributing this series as a standalone season, to provide support to anyone struggling with the challenges of managing and leading remotely.

Here’s a digest of the episodes from March 2020:

(We’ll bring you a further selection at the end of April, but if you’re keen you can catch all available episodes directly here, as well as subscribing to Management Cafe in your favourite podcast player.)

Creating healthy boundaries between life and work is something many people find difficult at the best of times, and now more than ever it is essential. Getting your mindset and intention clear about this is every bit as important as mastering your apps and devices, to help you draw some lines in the sand.

It’s easy for distributed teams to default to written chat, but that is far from the only option available in the rich multimedia collaboration platforms we use today. You can build connection and interaction, as well as simply communicating more appropriately, by carefully choosing from the many possibilities.

Remote teams do not usually operate in a vacuum, instead there’s a context to consider - the wider organisation, clients, associates, in a broader industry or sector.

Ensuring you remain connected and visible within those spheres is part of the leadership remit, but there are many different ways to address this and get the job done.

On remote teams you ‘feel the distance’ at some times more than others, but there are many different dimensions to this - few of which depend on physical proximity.

This episode will help you explore ways to bridge the gap, and understand why you might feel distant from one another on occasion.
